Where the Women At? →

In 10 short years, Wikipedia has accomplished some remarkable goals. More than 3.5 million articles in English? Done. More than 250 languages? Sure.
But another number has proved to be an intractable obstacle for the online encyclopedia: surveys suggest that less than 15 percent of its hundreds of thousands of contributors are women.

Fortunately, the latest browsers on these devices have CSS media queries, which allow developers to target browsers according to a variety of factors, including screen width. Here’s some sample CSS that delivers one of two versions of an image, depending on the screen size:
/* Screens bigger than 480px */
@media only screen and (min-device-width: 481px) {

Comcast takes control of NBC Universal - Business... →
NBC’s “30 Rock” on Thursday night spoofed Comcast’s impending takeover from General Electric Co. As a clock bell sounded, a neon “GE” atop an office building fizzled out and was replaced by a “K” inside a swoosh resembling Comcast’s logo.
“Wow, out with GE, in with Kabletown,” said Tina Fey’s character, Liz Lemon....

So it’s not easy for outsiders to see how Facebook is able to innovate and optimize their service so much more effectively than other companies. In my own attempt as an outsider to understand more about how Facebook operates, I assembled these observations over a period of months. Out of respect for the privacy of my sources, I’ve removed all names and mention of specific features/products....

Specifically, the system tracks whether recipients hide certain messages or mark them as spam, or whether they click “Like” on the message or comment on it, or whether they actually click through to see the application itself. “Using a bunch of signals like that, we’re able to infer the likelihood that something is a high-quality message,” Taylor said. LivingSocial, Amazon and profit
Having read at a swath of retrospective analysis, I’m going to wrap-up my thoughts on the LivingSocial + Amazon gift card promotion earlier this week (I did threaten to do so). As that NYT article notes, neither Amazon nor LivingSocial disclosed how much the deal cost. Yet Amazon is a $175M investor in LivingSocial and the scale of the deal was ridiculous.

Today, English-language spam in Google’s results is less than half what it was five years ago, and spam in most other languages is even lower than in English.
